Recovery Timeline

What Happens to My Body After an Auto Injury?

Stage I — First 72 Hours

Swelling and pain begin to develop around the injured area.

Treatment: R.I.C.E. — rest and support of injured areas, ice to block swelling, pain and spasms, compression to reduce swelling, and elevation to reduce pain and throbbing.

Stage II — 2–4 Days

Trapped fluid begins to restrict motion.

This causes pain and delays healing. Early, coordinated care helps restore motion.

Stage III — 5 Days to 6 Weeks

Without care, injuries can become chronic.

Chronic pain, limited range of motion and stiffness, weakening of muscles and ligaments, loss of normal sensation, poor cellular health, increased risk of re-injury and accelerated degeneration.

Stage IV — 3–14 Weeks

Long-term recovery and rehabilitation.

A structured rehabilitative program helps restore strength and function. Contact us to discuss your recovery plan.
