How NCV/EMG Testing is Helpful After a Car Accident

Chambers Medical Group is one of the highest rated car accident medical care facilities in the Tampa Bay area. On staff is patient favorite, Dr. Deryk Harting. Below is an excellent discussion  by Dr. Harting regarding NCV/EMG testing and its value after a car accident.

Car accidents can cause various neurological injuries and symptoms due to their traumatic nature. A common issue is whiplash, where forceful movements of the head and neck can strain or tear muscles and ligaments leading to cervical spine damage. This can irritate or compress cervical spinal nerves, leading to radiculopathy (a condition where nerve roots are pinched, resulting in pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness radiating into the arms). Additionally, the impact from an accident can cause intervertebral discs to herniate or bulge, pressing on nearby nerves and causing radiculopathy in the upper or lower extremities. Facet joints (spinal joints that help stabilize and guide spinal movement) are also susceptible to injury, leading to inflammation and nerve irritation. In more severe cases, the spinal cord itself may be damaged, affecting motor and sensory functions depending on the injury’s location and severity.

NCV (Nerve Conduction Velocity) and EMG (Electromyography) are diagnostic tests used to assess the function and health of nerves and muscles. NCV testing measures how quickly electrical signals travel through a nerve to evaluate the integrity and function of peripheral nerves. During the test, small electrodes are placed on the skin over the nerve and a mild electrical impulse is delivered. The speed and strength of the nerve’s response are recorded to identify possible nerve damage from compression, inflammation, or demyelination. This test is also useful for diagnosing conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome or diabetic neuropathy. On the other hand, EMG measures the electrical activity of muscles both at rest and during contraction. A fine needle electrode is inserted into the muscle to assess muscle function and nerve-to-muscle communication. EMG is used to diagnose muscle-related conditions and motor neuron disorders like muscular dystrophies or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig’s Disease).

NCV and EMG testing can be crucial for diagnosing and managing injuries sustained in a car accident in multiple ways:

  1. Identifying Nerve Damage: NCV testing measures how well electrical signals travel through the nerves, helping to identify whether nerves are damaged or compressed due to herniated discs, fractures, or other injuries.
  2. Diagnosing Radiculopathy: NCV testing helps pinpoint which specific nerves are affected, based on their conduction speeds and responses.
  3. Assessing Muscle Function: If nerves are damaged then muscles may not receive proper signals, leading to muscle weakness or atrophy. EMG helps determine the extent of this dysfunction and whether it is due to nerve damage or a primary muscle problem.
  4. Guiding Treatment: The results from NCV and EMG tests can guide treatment decisions. For example, if the tests show significant nerve compression, surgical procedures may be indicated over less invasive interventions like physiotherapy, chiropractic, or prescription medications. Understanding the specific nature of nerve or muscle injuries allows for targeted and effective treatment strategies.
  5. Documenting Injury Severity: NCV and EMG testing provides objective data on the extent of neurological damage. This documentation is not only important for determining appropriate treatment strategies but also for legal and insurance purposes as it may support claims related to the accident.

Together, NCV and EMG testing are valuable tools in evaluating the impact of car accident injuries on the nervous and muscular systems. They provide critical insights into nerve and muscle function, help in diagnosing specific conditions, and inform appropriate treatment and management strategies.
